A few important things you should know when starting an NGO

In order to establish an NGO you must be at least five members. If the NGO you intend to register is an international NGO, at least two the members must be Tanzanians. An NGO can be recognized as an international NGO if it is registered and recognized as an NGO in another country.

  • In Mainland Tanzania, NGOs are legally governed by the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977, the National NGOs Policy, 2001 as well as the NGOs Act Cap 56. The NGOs Acts, among other requirements calls for compliance, transparency and accountability.

    Moreover, NGOs being body corporates as prescribed by Section 31 (a) and (b) of the NGOs Act, they are required to abide by the laws governing their operations, such as the Immigration Act, Tax Administration Act, Employment and Labor Relations Act and other written laws. NGOs are also obliged to respect the culture and tradition of the people and communities in which they operate.

  • Staring an NGO starts by filing the required documents to the Registrar of NGOs through an online application

    An application for the registration of an NGO should be accompanied by the following documents:-

    i. Dully filled in application form;
    ii. Constitution;
    iii. Minutes of the meeting;
    iv. Recommendation letter;
    v. Copy of a certificate of incorporation and a resolution (for an international NGO);
    vi. CVs of office bearers.

  • An NGO is a taxable entity in Tanzania. However NGOs that are recognized as a charitable organization enjoys some favorable tax incentives under section 64 of the income tax act.

  • The registration fee of an NGO differs depending on the level on which it is established. Below are the current fees of different levels an NGO can be established:-

    District level: TZS.80,000/=
    Regional level: TZS.100,000/=
    National level: TZS.115,000/=
    International NGO: USD.350.00

  • In order to establish an NGO you must be at least five members.

    If the NGO you intend to register is an international NGO, at least two the members must be Tanzanians.
