What is electronic Money transfer levy?
Electronic money transfer levy is the levy which was introduced in 2021 levied on mobile money transactions. Initially the levy dubbed as "mobile money transter" was between TZS10 (US$0.0043) and TZS10,000 (US$4) on mobile money transactions, depending on the amount sent and withdrawn. The levy applied in addition to VAT (18%) and excise duty on mobile money transfer and withdrawal fees (10%).
Due to public outcry the levy was decreased by 30% in September, 2021.
The Finance Act 2022 replaced the term “mobile money transfer” with “electronic money” and amending the maximum range of the levy from TZS 10,000(US$4) per transaction to TZS 4,000 (US$ 1.72). With recent changes, the scope to impose the levy has significantly been widened to include all electronic transactions which include all bank and mobile transactions, except: Use of ATM cards at authorized POS stops; Utility payments; Lipa namba; and transactions relating to salary transfers. -
